SYMPOSIUM: "Extraction and Aesthetics: Pasts, Currents, Futures"
Welcome to the international symposium September 13 - 14!
The symposium is a series of lectures, workshops and exhibitions organized by the research project How Norway Made the World Whiter and Velferden. The lectures discuss the relationship between mining, landscape change and aesthetics in the past, present and future.
PROGRAM:
Friday 13.09: Lectures by international researchers at Jøssingfjord Science Museum: Karen Pinkus, Stephanie O'Rourke, Siobhan Angus and Patrick Anthony. The lectures will also be streamed digitally.
Saturday 14.09: Artist presentations, exhibition, performance and workshop with SANDSKOLEN at Velferden - Sokndals Scene for Samtidskunst. There is a free bus from Stavanger bus terminal at 09.30, and the audience will be back in the city by 18.00.

Karen Pinkus is a professor of literature at Cornell University, USA and published the book Subsurface (University of Minnesota Press) in 2023.
Siobhan Angus is a historian and curator who recently published the book Camera Geologica: An Elemental History of Photography (Duke University Press 2024).
Stephanie O'Rourke is an art historian at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and her book Picturing Landscape in an Age of Extraction (University of Chicago Press) will be published in autumn 2024.
Patrick Anthony is a historian and researcher at Uppsala University where he is working on the forthcoming book Unearthed: Science and Environment Across Mineral Frontiers.
