RESIDENCY: Herman Hjorth Berge

Herman Hjorth Berge (b. 1997, Stavanger) works between architecture, art, and academia on issues related to decolonization, the natural crisis, and the climate crisis. Herman is educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm – where he currently lives and works.

During his residency at Velferden in January 2025, Herman will write and develop a project for his post-master's degree at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.

“The stay at Velferden will be a joyful reunion with Southwest Norway and a great opportunity to further develop the research project in a very relevant place. During the stay at Velferden I hope to complete the writing work for the research project, as well as further develop the project in dialogue with the place and the people around it. In addition to this academic and artistic production, I am also very interested in learning more about the work around Velferden, and I hope to engage in many conversations about the establishment and operation of the site and residency program. This is interesting for my research as an example of how to engage with extractive landscapes and places shaped by modern industrialization, in a creative and sustainable way.”
