RESIDENCY: Simon Daniel Tegnander Wenzel

Simon Daniel Tegnander Wenzel (b.1988 - Hamburg) works across different media such as performance, scent, moving images, sound and installation. He searches for interfaces between technology, landscape and body, extracting frequencies, molecules, pigments, memories and knowledge. Using the intimate or familiar as a starting point, Wenzel uses fabulation and dissociation as tools to re-contextualize the "consensus reality".

Through his practice, Wenzel aims to develop performative strategies that take a critical look at normative structures related to identity, nature and tradition, seen from a Western social perspective.

Simon is part of Velferden's programme WASTE / DEPOSIT .

Simon first visited Velferden a year and a half ago. Then he visited the sand dump and saw how human mining activity has shaped the surrounding landscape and nature. Simon is interested in the layers of invisible reality over time, and what lies beneath the surface of the landscape. The intention is to work with this through sound, and to create compositions based on field recordings he makes on site.

For this work, he uses various types of microphones, such as contact microphones, hydrophones to record sound in the river and the runoff from the landfill, as well as EMF microphones that capture electromagnetic fields and noise from live objects.

The process consists of a sonic mapping of the landscape and spaces around Velferden. Simon is interested in the spatial aspects of sound and works to zoom in, amplify, distort and manipulate the material digitally to look for what is hidden in the recordings. The overall goal is to create a sound work for a live setting/sound installation.
