Hanna Sjøstrand

Hanna Sjöstrand (b. 1978) is a visual artist living in Oslo. She was born in Karlskoga in Sweden. The city is the center of the Swedish arms industry and this is a recurring theme in her art.

Sjöstrand studied at Malmö Art Academy and graduated in 2009. Her paintings can be seen at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo, the School of Business, Economics and Law in Gothenburg and the hospital in Malmö. They are represented in private collections and museums in Sweden. She has received prizes and grants, including from NBK and the Swedish Arts Council.

Hanna Sjöstrand is part of Velferden's programme WASTE / DEPOSIT.

Sjöstrand works mainly with painting. Through projects with a strong contextual framing, she explores different positions of human interaction with their surroundings. Recently, she has increasingly focused on painting that carries material site-specificity and ritual inputs to painterly actions.

In parallel with this exploration, Sjöstrand is often involved in various collaborative projects, mainly in theater. Most recently, she was involved in Knockouts, a performance about MMA, in which she participated as a performer.

During his stay at Velferden , Sjöstrand worked on part of the project Cave. Cave explores man's relationship and interaction with mountains in a historical perspective. In Sokndal, she walked in the backside of whiteness. The paintings are made with color produced by waste products from the mining company Titania AS that she finds in nature.
