Maiken Stene (b. 1983, NO)
Maiken Stene lives and works in Sokndal, Norway. She holds degrees in fine art from Malmö Art Academy and The Cooper Union School of Art in New York. Stene's art is rooted in her personal relationship with landscapes and how historical representations of landscapes continue to influence our relationship with nature today. Stene is best known for her painting practice, which she presents in the form of scenographic installations mixed with video, sculpture, text and an academic programme.
She has exhibited at venues such as Nordnorsk Kunstnersenter, Akershus Kunstsenter, Trøndelag Center for Contemporary Art, Stavanger Art Museum, LNM, Oslo Kunstforening, Hå Gamle Prestegard and Uppsala Art Museum. Her works have been purchased by institutions such as Stavanger Art Museum, REV-Ocean, Oslo Municipality, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Equinor, the Norwegian Arts Council and several private collections. Stene is the director and curator of Velferden, and in 2024 she also participated as an artist in Velferden's two-week workshop SANDSKOLEN.
