Simon Daniel Tegnander Wenzel
Simon Daniel Tegnander Wenzel (b.1988 - Hamburg) works across various media such as performance, scent, moving images, sound and installation. He searches for interfaces between technology, landscape and body and extracts frequencies, molecules, pigments, memories and knowledge. With the close or familiar as a starting point, Wenzel uses fabulation and dissociation as tools to re-contextualize the "consensus reality".
Through his practice, Wenzel wants to develop performative strategies that direct a critical eye towards normative structures related to identity, nature and tradition, seen from a Western societal perspective.
Simon holds a BA from the Tromsø Academy of Fine Arts and an MA from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. He has recently exhibited at: Buffalo AKG Art Museum (USA), GammelStrand, Copenhagen (DK), Billedkunstnerne i Oslo (NO) and EKKM Tallin (EST).
Simon is part of our programme: WASTE / DEPOSIT.
Simon was on residency at Velferden in November 2024 as part of the program WASTE / DEPOSIT .
Simon visited Velferden first time in 2023, when he visited the sand dump and saw how human mining activity has shaped the landscape and the surrounding nature. Simon is interested in layers of invisible reality over time, and what lies beneath the surface of the landscape. The intention is to work with this through sound, and to create compositions based on field recordings he makes on site.
For this work, he uses various types of microphones, such as contact microphones, hydrophones to record sound in the river and runoff from the landfill, as well as EMF microphones that capture electromagnetic fields and noise from current-carrying objects.
The process consists of a sonic mapping of the landscape and surrounding spaces. Velferden . Simon is interested in the spatial aspects of sound, and works with zooming in, amplifying, distorting and digitally manipulating the material to search for what is hidden in the recordings. The overall goal is to create a sound work for a live setting/sound installation.
